All reindeer hides in our product range are from Lapland in the north of Finland
. There, about 100,000 reindeer graze freely in the fields
. Most of the Nordic reindeer are brown in colour, some with slight shades of grey. However, a very small number of reindeer have a natural white mutation. These reindeer are known as albino reindeer and can easily be recognised by their light coat.
The reindeer in Finland are herded as part of long tradition. The sole reason for herding reindeer is the production of meat. The hides are a natural byproduct of the meat production. That means that no reindeer is bred for their hide. That also means that the albino reindeer hides are not specifically bred, but occur randomly. This makes the albino reindeer hide even rarer, so much that less than one percent of all reindeer hides have a natural white colour.
Reindeer hides make for a beautiful decorative piece
in the home. Their natural, Nordic look catches everyone's eye and brings a piece of nature into your home. Please note that reindeer hides should only be used as decoration
. Seeing as the hairs are hollow on the inside, they break off easily when sat or stood on. Furthermore, the hair falls out easily when the reindeer hide is exposed to direct heat. Please keep the reindeer hide away from radiators and other heat sources.
